Bread for Starving Souls – Compassion DTS Latvia Outreach

By YWAM Newcastle on February 20, 2014 in Discipleship Training Schools, Evangelism, Outreach

Yesterday we brought Bread to the city.

With seventy loaves of bread, twelve of us headed out into the streets of Riga, Latvia with a simple, yet very important mission: to spread the love of the One who brings true nourishment, the One who brings life.

In the book of John, Jesus speaks out that he is the “bread of life” and whoever goes to him “shall not hunger” (John 6:35). He alone is the most vital nourishment and yet He still provides for our physical needs. Here at YWAM Riga, every few weeks a team is sent out on the streets with loaves of bread and a word of love during what is called “The Bread Project.” The mission? Simply to remind people, and in some cases share for the first time, that they are loved immeasurably by our Father in heaven.

While the bread obviously fills the stomach, God’s love is shared to warm the soul.

And in our efforts, we were able to serve Latvians in a new way. With each encounter, we learned a new story and learned so much more about the needs of this nation. Some people simply smiled and passed by without receiving, others joyfully accepted the gift of Bread. Some had only words of thanks, and others overflowed with conversation.

Each person we encountered has their own story, their own sorrows, their own joys, and we simply went to them with open hands ready to give (and receive) whatever God had in store.

We know that God reminded so many that He sees them and He loves them.

In breaking bread together, we were able to release life into the streets of Riga.
