“Awesome, I get to go and learn more about God as well as being involved in missions work!” This was my thought after I decided to do a Barista Discipleship Training School (DTS) with YWAM Newcastle.
I had no idea that I would have the opportunity to not only learn more about my passions, Jesus and coffee, but get hands on ministry experience too!
That is exactly what the Barista DTS did for me.
While on my DTS, I was constantly in a state of learning more about the nature of God and how I, specifically, connect with Him. I felt the love of God, which I’d heard people talk about often, for the first time. When I pursued God above all else, that feeling of being loved never went away.
Through the encounters I had with God, I not only found my calling, but my purpose too.
Over the course of the school many mindsets in my life and ideas I believed were shattered. Lies about who I believed I was supposed to be and who God was to me, were all broken off. I had put God in a box, only allowing Him pieces of my life, but when I surrendered and dived fully into who God made me uniquely to be, He broke out of that box and radically changed me! I now have a deeper understanding of who I am worshiping and why.
The ‘Barista’ elective is so much more than just sitting and watching documentaries about coffee. While this is a piece of it, I was also taught hands on, practical skills and given amazing opportunities to work in YWAM Newcastle’s in house cafe and help with the launch of a cafe in the suburbs of Sydney.
I learned how to dream and be creative, and to make those things my own instead of just following the crowds.
While this was the best six months of my life thus far, the greatest thing about doing a Discipleship Training School is even though I’ve completed the course, I will never finish it. DTS was so much more than just an escape from everyday life or a “honeymoon” period.
DTS is a launching pad, sending you out with purpose for the rest of your life.
