Packing for overseas travel can be tricky, especially when you are travelling to multiple climates. Don’t worry, we are here to help! Here are some ‘must-haves’ for your time with us in Australia. Our hope is that you can make our home yours, for the duration of your stay.
Luggage:
We recommend bringing a hikers backpack as well as a smaller, day pack.
When packing please make sure you’re only bringing as much luggage as you can personally carry/handle comfortably. We suggest you bring no more than 15kg (33lb) in a hikers pack, plus your day pack/carry on. Please note that it is likely flights to your outreach location will only include one checked bag with a maximum limit of 23kg (50lb).
Bedding
Bedding is required for both the lecture and outreach phases of your course. We supply a fitted sheet, however you will need to provide the rest yourself.
Sun Protection
The Australian sun is much harsher than other countries and you will burn much faster than you expect, even in the winter time. Please bring appropriate sun protection.
We have students and staff from a range of cultures and backgrounds living in our home and want to honour each individual in the way we dress. Please make sure to pack appropriately.

Newcastle is a coastal city in the Southern Hemisphere, so our Januarys are hot and our Julys are cold. A typical summer will see days between 30oc – 40oc (86of – 104of) in January and February with higher humidity. Winter is more mild with average temperatures of 10oc – 18oc (50of – 65of) over the months of June, July and August, this is not cold enough to snow!
Our main residence is a five-minute walk from the main street of Mayfield where you can find supermarkets, pharmacies, cafes, the post office, banks, op shops and fast food/takeaway restaurants.
Buses and trains leave Mayfield regularly if you are wanting to go explore Newcastle for further shopping, cafes, the beach and more!
